Home Reno Challenge – Week 4

Week 4…SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! This Jeffrey Court Home Renovation Challenge is flying by you guys.  Check out last week here if you missed it.  We made some SERIOUS progress this week so let’s take a peek.

Tile Installation begins…

The first step in preparing the tile before you do anything is to lay it all out.  Because this Jeffrey Court emblem tile from Home Depot tile has a large design, it takes four tiles to complete the pattern.  Deciding where you want the design to begin is the first step.  It’s like a puzzle, really, and once you make this decision and figure out how many tiles you’re going to have to cut, you’re good to go.

Just like frosting a cake…

Mixing the mud is something I leave to the Mister.  I think he secretly loves doing it, although he would never admit it.  I like to pretend I’m the foreman on this project and he just rolls his eyes and goes with it.

We started with the hearth area and spread the mud on about a fourth of it before we started laying out the tile.  We used 1/8 inch spacers in between the tile for the grout line and I chose to go with bright white grout so the tile would really POP.

We started with the emblem design smack dabbally do right in the center of the hearth and that only left us with two tiles that we had to cut.  Notice how I said “we.”  You won’t see my hands anywhere near that tile cutter in the photo below.  My man insists on doing all the cutting.  He even has to hide the kitchen knives because I am one of those accident-prone-cut-myself-every-time-I-use-a-knife kind of girls.

With the exception of running into a few snags while we were prepping the fireplace before we even began, the tiling came off without a hitch.  Well, at least the part we got done.  My main challenge is that my hubby is gone during the week for work and we have to pack everything in on the weekend.  Next weekend we will finish it up by going up and around the fireplace and putting on the grout.  Here’s a look at where we’re at now.

Oh, and before I take off til next time, here’s a little sneaky peak at the wall color and plantation shutters.  Just a tease, though…

Let’s just all say it in unison, “GOR-GEOUS.”   Am I right? No more baby poo green.    It’s all about the Sherwin Williams Light Fench Gray.

Leave me your comments and let me know what you think.  I’d love to hear and don’t forget to vote right here.

See ya next time for Week 5. V-O-T-E
