Welcome to DIY day you guys. It’s been a minute since I’ve done any crafting for this series, so I’m excited to bring you this easy Christmas ornament tutorial.
This one has me seeing buffalo check and I wanted to share it with you ASAP because as I’m writing this, there are only 57 days til Christmas. WHAT???
This pattern that looks like repetitive blocks will definitely be making an appearance, again, this year in my holiday decor. It is a perfect design for Christmas and its resurgence is more popular than ever. I, however, wanted to bring in some new items since I have used this theme in the past. I searched and searched for EXTRA LARGE buffalo check ornaments that would be a statement piece for my tree but to no avail, so I put on my DIY thinking cap and came up with this idea.
Supplies you’ll need.
- Round wooden discs ( Mine are 7-inch diameter purchased at Walmart)
- Buffalo check fabric – 1/2 yard
- Modge Podge
- Scissors
- Drill
- Red ribbon
- Foam brush
Cut out your circles.
For this step, I flipped the fabric over and traced around the disc. My Walmart only had 8 wood discs in stock so I bought them all and will be looking for more, but I knew this could get me started.
Now that your fabric is cut, let’s Modge Podge.
Start by applying a thin layer over the surface of the disc and then place your fabric on top making sure to line up the edges.
Once it’s in place, repeat the same step, again, by applying the Modge Podge onto the top of your fabric. Spread it out evenly ensuring that the entire surface is saturated. If you’ve never done this before, your ornament will appear to have a milky white look but no worries, it will dry clear.
Continue with the process until all your discs are covered and let them dry completely. This may take a couple of hours. In the meantime, cut your ribbon into 7-inch strips.
This next step is drilling and that’s why it’s important to make sure the glue is dry. If it’s not, your fabric will catch and start to pull up. Now, drill a ribbon hole in each disc.
The last step is to string your ribbon through each hole and tie a knot at the top. TA DA, you are finished. You’ve just made an ornament that’s going to take your tree over the top no matter what your style is. Buffalo check isn’t just for country decor any more. It can be used as a base giving you an excuse to stack pattern upon pattern.
I am so anxious to get my large tree up and incorporate this big, bold pattern into the rest of my decor, how about you? Be sure and check back soon for some other Christmas DIYs I have up my sleeve that will go perfectly with today’s project and to follow all my Christmas home decor, make sure to follow me over on Instagram.

These are so cute ~ thank you for your tutorial. I apologize for being a little thick between the ears but 1) Do you only cover only one side of the disc with the fabric? 2) It looks like you cut the fabric to just cover the front of the disc. What do you do with the edges of the disc? I am probably overthinking all of this and making it more difficult than it is. Thank you

Hi Sara,
I love all the questions so keep them coming. Sometimes when I describe something, I just assume everyone knows what I’m talking about. LOL. I did just dover the front side. I didn’t mind having unfinished sides and back. You could always paint the disk all over first if you wanted to do that. I hope you make them. I’d love to see.
