Brighten Up Your Farmhouse Style

When you think of the perfect farmhouse, what immediately comes to mind for you? Is it the scores of photos that you see on social media that are full of farm sinks, hardwood floors and layers and layers of texture? Is it a beautiful vintage piece of furniture that has been refurbished, or is it the walls and walls of shiplap? Don’t get me wrong. I love all of these things, big emphasis on “ALL,” but if you know me, you know adding color to my farmhouse style is something I do over and over and over. I talk about it all the time and, I’ve even blogged about it in the past. You can read my prior post about color right here.

Before I talk to you about adding color to your decor, I want to take you back to where my love for this style began.

Where It Began

When I was a little girl, years and years before I would ever begin to think about decorating my own home, my grandparents lived in the perfect farmhouse. Well, in my eyes it was perfect. It was a traditional white two-story home with a front porch and porch swing. It was surrounded by acres and acres of land to explore that fueled my imagination. My grandparents’ hearts were bursting at the seams with love for all of my cousins and I and spending time on that farm with them are to this day some of my best childhood memories.

So, when I became an adult and started thinking about what my own decorating style would be, it was natural to want to emulate the place that brought me so much happiness.

Over the years, though, I kept finding myself drawn to color. Whether I was pulling something out of my closet to wear that day or choosing a new throw pillow for the couch, I couldn’t get enough color. Thank goodness there is no hard and fast rule that says farmhouse can only be chippy and white.

Choosing Your Color

Figuring out what accent color to use in your home is as easy as getting dressed in the morning. Think about what you gravitate towards when you walk into your closet. Do you constantly grab the same shirt, or do you just throw on what happens to be clean that day? Is there a particular color that you feel good in or get the most compliments when you wear it? For me, I have always loved blue, all shades. Maybe because I have blue eyes, but when I heard Classic Blue was the Pantone 2020 color of the year, well, that’s all I needed to hear to incorporate it in my home decor.

Make Subtle Changes

Adding color to your decor doesn’t mean you need to buy new furniture and it doesn’t mean you have to use whatever Pantone says is the “Color of the Year.” It can be subtle by starting small with pillows and throws or maybe even paint your front door for a fresh look. Surround yourself with a color that makes you happy. Then if you decide later to invest in a new piece of furniture or new rug, you already know how that color will look and feel in your home.

Change Is A Good Thing

I am somebody who likes change. I embrace it. So if you’re in a season where you’re feeling blasé about your home decor, try surrounding yourself with your favorite color. I promise it will make you smile.
